Lockitron.com – Your Phone As Your Door’s Keys

Lockitron

Lockitron offers, for a $295 one-time fee, a deadbolt locking mechanism for standard doors that can be controlled remotely via your smart-phone using NFC.

This allows you to effectively replace your door keys with your phone, by using a phone app in order to lock or unlock your door.

The deadbolt comes with physical keys which act as a backup in case of loss of power or Internet connectivity. The latency for opening the door from the moment the command is given on the phone is currently between 0.5 and 2 seconds; initially, the app takes 3 to 6 seconds to start up on the phone.

There are some trust issues that the company must overcome; as a de-facto door lock provider, Lockitron helds the authentication keys to all the doors where they are installed, making them and their devices susceptible to cybernetic attacks. The concept of a computer hacker opening your front door lock becomes a reality. And the FBI won’t have to destroy front-doors next time they come for a raid, they’ll just have their own Lockitron master-key instead :-). Would you use one for your apartment?

Bugrocket.com – Bug Tracking Made Easy

BugRocket

Bugrocket.com is a simple issue tracking system designed for small teams. Built upon the idea that too many features can sometimes stand in the way, Bugrocket aims to simplify bug management and to keep things easy to use.

The bugs are organized into lists, and lists are grouped into individual projects. Each bug has one out of 4 possible states (triage, assigned, QA or closed) and it can be tagged with free-form words for easier retrieval.

The app gives to each client a personal subdomain where his bugs are being tracked. The first 30 days are free; beyond that the app costs $20 / month, with unlimited users, unlimited projects and 25 GB storage space. More comments on the pricing model are available in a HackerNews discussion thread.

The friendly name of the domain correlates well with the actual rocket that appears as part of the website design. This contributes to the site friendliness; part of the reason Bugrocket makes itself noticed is due to the simplicity of the interface – let’s hope it’s a thing they manage to keep as the project moves forward.

Paymo.biz – Time Tracker With Integrated Invoices

Paymo.biz

Paymo.biz is an online time tracker webapp that allows anyone to keep track of the hours worked for different clients and, based on this information, to generate invoices for them.

The app supports a freemium model for up to 3 users; it charges $3.99 per user per month for companies having more than 3 employees.

For Windows and Macs, they offer a standalone executable called PaymoPlus which provides native desktop integration for those operating systems.

With more than 1’000 followers on Twitter and with approximatively 10’000 unique visitors monthly as shown by Compete, Paymo seems to have found early adopters and the initial traction required in order to get valuable feedback on their app. As they continue to develop their product I’m excited to see where they’re headed next.

OnlineFunctionGrapher.com – Function Charting

Online Function Grapher

Online Function Grapher is an online tool that draws functions specified via a mathematical formula on a two-dimensional chart.

The domain has been online since March 2011; since then the attention to details was managed pretty well: the scrolling wheel on the mouse can be used to zoom in or zoom out the graph, and a lot of expressions are recognized, such as sqrt (square root), x^y (x to the power of y) or sin/cos/tag functions.

The webapp includes additional features, such as saving the current image as a .jpeg, or linking to it for someone else’s benefit.

The tool has enough features to be a powerful aid when it comes to function plotting, but it still manages to keep everything simple by using a clean and powerful interface. While it doesn’t offer advanced features which would make it compete with more advanced tools in this field, it has enough simplicity and intuitiveness of the UI to become a powerful aid when one needs a quick graph or plotting job (or is simply curious how a function really looks like).

Projecturf has tons of features, specified on their presentational pages in more detail. The last update on their site is from February 2011, where they announce a bunch of new things, amongs which we find integration with the Dropbox cloud-based storage.

Compete.com shows their traffic revolving around 1K monthly, but I really hope those guys are more popular outside US or that they’ll soon manage to spike their traffic according to the quality of their software. Keep up the good work, guys!
