WorkFlowy – Organize Your Brain

WorkFlowy is a browser-based to-do tracker tool which allows users to organize their tasks in an hierarchical tree-based structure.

The app allows each to-do task to be marked with one or several tags for easy retrieval in the future via tag-based search. In addition to the traditional site, WorkFlowy has a special version dedicated to mobile devices.

The app features on its homepage a list of impressive testimonials, one of them being from Matt Cutts, head of Google webspam efforts, which states that the project has become one of three tabs that he keeps open in the browser, along with Gmail and Google Calendar.

The site was launched in September 2010 by co-founders Jesse Patel and Mike Turitzin. It has around 10’000 visitors on a monthly basis and it has been featured extensively in tech blogs such as TechCrunch, TheNextWeb and LifeHacker.

SugarSync – Access Your Data

SugarSync is a file sync and online backup tool that allows users to access their files across all their devices via a unified storage system.

SugarSync supports Macs, PCs, iPhone, iPads, Android, Blackberries as well as other mobile devices. Users can login into their account, sync content from multiple devices as well as access or update documents on the go.

The site currently offers 4 pricing plans varying from 30 GB up to 250 GB of storage, with fees from $5 USD/month up to $25 USD/month. There are group plans available for business customers. Users can also sign up for a free plan that offers 5 GB of free storage.

Compete shows the site’s traffic at around 100’000 unique monthly visitors. At the end of December 2008, the company raised in total $26.5 million USD from venture capitalists; both founders left the company one month earlier (in November 2008). SugarSync is currently headed by acting CEO Laura Yecies.

Xtranormal – Online Movie Maker

Xtranormal is a site that allows users to create short animation videos based on a text script. The text can be annotated with additional information, such as a background scene, custom appearance details for the involved characters or emoticons which reflect character gestures.

Xtranormal allows users to create 3D scenes via a drag and drop interface. There are hundreds of actor models to choose from, as well as different backgrounds, lightning configurations and camera setups.

The company offers both downloadable software products as well as a web-based video creation service. Until 2011 it claims to have created over 10 million videos, and the counter keeps going. The site managed to attract a strong audience with hundreds of thousands of visitors in each of the last 12 months.

Xtranormal was funded in 2006 having Richard Szalwinski as one of the initial co-founders and CEO. He left the company in 2010 and Graham Sharp took over as the new CEO. The company currently has 30 employees according to CrunchBase.

Picnik – Online Photo Editing

Picnik is an online image editor that allows people to alter photos from within their browsers. Uploaded photos can be resized, processed and manipulated via a comprehensive set of operations designed to rival traditional image processing software.

The site impresses via its easy on-boarding process: there is no sign-up required and the initial photo can be uploaded from disk or selected from a list of suggestions that the site makes available.

Picnik has around 5 million monthly unique visitors according to Compete. Most of its features are available for free. Picnik Premium costs $24.95 a year and offers more effects, additional fonts, stickers, layering and an ad-free editing environment.

Picnik has rapidly grown into a large player in the online photo editing arena, and it has done so without venture capital, bootstrapped by Jonathan Sposato and co-founders Mike Harrington and Darrin Massena. The company was acquired by Google on 1st of March 2010; Jonathan, its CEO at that time, was a previous Google engineer who sold his previous startup (Phatbits) to Google back in 2005. Jonathan owns a restaurant and bar in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle where he enjoys spending his free time. In a 2009 interview he shares more details about his interests, as well as additional information regarding Picnik.

Minutes.io – Take Notes and Share Them Right Away

minutes.io makes it simple and effective to take notes during a meeting and distribute them to the participants as fast as possible.

If an Internet connection is detected the notes can be sent right away; otherwise the app can store the data locally inside the browser until an Internet connection is available.

The app works incredible easy, partially because it doesn’t require the user to signup for an account. From a technical perspective, cookies and offline storage are being used to recognize the user and store his data.

The domain has been registered at the begining of April 2011 from Bruchkbel, Germany. The testimonials on the site claim that it has been labelled as the next “doodle.com”. The UI is nice and it makes something which users want, so it might end up just there – we’ll see how the site evolves in the following months…
